Lando Norris has firmly put himself back into the 2026 Formula 1 title conversation after securing his second consecutive Grand Prix victory at Zandvoort, but Kimi Antonelli remains in control of the championship.

Norris produced another impressive performance at the Dutch Grand Prix, recovering from losing the lead to Antonelli after the restart to eventually hunt down the Mercedes driver and retake first place with 18 laps remaining. The victory was his 13th in Formula 1 and his second in a row following his triumph in Hungary.  

The turnaround for Norris has been remarkable. Just a few races ago, his title defence appeared to be fading, but McLaren’s recent upgrades have transformed the team’s competitiveness. Norris has now shown that he can consistently fight at the front and has become the clearest threat to Antonelli’s championship lead.

Antonelli still has a significant advantage. The Mercedes driver leads the standings with 242 points, while George Russell and Lewis Hamilton are tied on 183. Norris has moved up to fourth with 159 points, leaving him 83 points behind Antonelli with 11 races still remaining.  

Despite the gap, Norris has plenty of reason to believe. He is now only the second driver this season, after Antonelli, to win two consecutive Grands Prix. His recent form has also coincided with McLaren making major gains, particularly since the team’s upgrade package introduced at the Hungarian Grand Prix.

Antonelli himself admitted after Zandvoort that Mercedes no longer have the fastest car on the grid. The Italian believes McLaren have made a significant step forward, making the championship battle much more difficult as the season enters its final stretch.  

Norris, however, remains realistic about his chances. Despite his back to back victories, the reigning champion believes McLaren still need more performance if they are to mount a serious title challenge. He knows from experience how difficult it is to recover a large points deficit over the final part of a season.

Last year, Max Verstappen showed exactly what is possible. He recovered from a 104 point deficit around the same stage of the season and went on to fight for the championship until the final rounds. That comeback provides Norris with a reason to keep believing.

With Antonelli still leading comfortably, Mercedes remaining strong and McLaren closing the performance gap, the 2026 title fight could be heading for a dramatic final chapter.

Norris may still be 83 points behind, but after two straight victories, the reigning world champion is no longer simply chasing the championship.

He is becoming Antonelli’s biggest threat.
