George Russell made the perfect start to the Dutch Grand Prix Saturday by converting pole position into a controlled Sprint victory at Zandvoort.

The Mercedes driver led all 24 laps and kept his rivals at arm’s length throughout the race, eventually crossing the finish line 1.360 seconds ahead of Charles Leclerc. The victory marks Russell’s third Sprint win of the 2026 season.

Lando Norris looked set to finish second after keeping close to Russell during the opening stages, but Charles Leclerc found a way through on Lap 18. The Ferrari driver made the move stick and held on to claim second, while Norris had to settle for third.

Kimi Antonelli finished fourth for Mercedes, limiting the damage to his championship lead. Russell’s victory allowed him to take three points out of Antonelli’s advantage, but the young Italian remains firmly at the top of the standings.

Oscar Piastri finished fifth for McLaren, ahead of home favourite Max Verstappen in sixth. Verstappen struggled to make significant progress from his starting position and finished ahead of Lewis Hamilton, who could only manage seventh for Ferrari.

Pierre Gasly completed the points paying positions in eighth for Alpine, securing the final Sprint point.

The race remained relatively calm for most of its 24 laps, with overtaking difficult around the narrow Zandvoort circuit. The biggest moment came late in the race when rain began to fall, but it arrived too late to change the result.

Russell’s victory gives Mercedes valuable momentum heading into qualifying for Sunday’s Dutch Grand Prix. With Leclerc showing strong Ferrari pace and Norris unable to hold second, the battle at the front remains wide open.

For Russell, however, the message is clear. After a difficult run before the summer break, he has returned with a Sprint victory and is now ready to fight his teammate Antonelli for more points in the championship
