The Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has officially begun the next phase of Funadhoo Airport’s development, marking another milestone in the Government’s efforts to enhance regional air connectivity.

The development work was inaugurated at a special ceremony held in Funadhoo during President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s visit to Shaviyani Atoll. The event was officiated by Minister of Finance Moosa Zameer and MACL Managing Director Ibrahim Shareef.

Speaking at the ceremony, Managing Director Shareef highlighted that one of the key priorities under this phase is the installation of runway lighting systems before the end of the year, enabling night-time operations at the airport. He also announced that the project will introduce new terminal services, including the establishment of a luggage belt to improve passenger convenience and efficiency.

Funadhoo Airport, which became operational in 2020, features a 1,200-metre-long, 30-metre-wide runway, a 90-metre taxiway, and an apron measuring 150 metres by 50 metres.

The latest round of developments forms part of President Dr. Muizzu’s broader aviation strategy to strengthen domestic transport infrastructure and ensure that island communities have reliable, modern, and accessible air travel services.
