Pakistan Reports First Case of Mpox as Global Concerns Rise Over Deadlier Variant

Pakistan has confirmed its first case of the mpox virus, raising concerns amid a global alert over a more easily spread and deadlier variant recently detected in Sweden. The Ministry of Health announced the confirmed case on Friday, although the specific strain of the virus remains unidentified.

The patient, a 34-year-old from the northwestern province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, is currently receiving treatment. Irshad Roghani, director of public health in the province, stated that samples have been sent to Islamabad for genetic sequencing to determine which variant of the virus is responsible for the infection.

This confirmation comes just a day after Sweden reported the discovery of a more dangerous variant of the virus, known as Clade 1. This variant, which spreads more easily through close contact, has been linked to a deadly outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) that began in September. The Swedish case is the first instance of Clade 1 being detected outside of Africa, according to Sweden’s Public Health Agency.

The emergence of this variant has heightened global concerns, with health officials closely monitoring the situation to prevent a broader outbreak. In Pakistan, authorities are taking precautions and awaiting further analysis to confirm whether the same variant has reached the country.

As the situation develops, both Pakistan and the international community are on high alert, particularly given the recent surge in cases linked to the Clade 1 variant in Africa.
