MALÉ, Maldives — The Maldives and Malaysia have officially agreed to commence negotiations on a Preferential Trade Agreement (PTA) to deepen bilateral economic cooperation, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu announced today.
The announcement was made by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu during a joint press statement delivered alongside Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim at the President's Office, following high-level official bilateral discussions.
President Muizzu stated that the proposed trade pact would pave the way for enhanced commercial ties and unlock new market opportunities for businesses across both nations.
Highlighting the Maldives’ economic potential, President Muizzu extended an open invitation to the Malaysian government and private sector to invest in the country's strategic priority areas. These key sectors include renewable energy, digital infrastructure, construction, and Islamic finance.
The initiative marks a significant step forward in elevating bilateral economic ties, promoting cross-border trade, and fostering deeper investment cooperation between the Maldives and Malaysia.
