MALÉ, Maldives — President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has officially extended an invitation to the Malaysian government and Malaysian enterprises to explore and capitalize on key investment opportunities in the Maldives' primary strategic sectors, following high-level bilateral talks with visiting Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu announced the investment invitation during a joint press statement delivered alongside Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim at the President's Office, held on the sidelines of Prime Minister Anwar's official state visit to the Maldives.
The President stated that both sides held extensive discussions to explore concrete and practical pathways to significantly strengthen bilateral trade and economic relations. As a landmark outcome of the deliberations, both leaders agreed to officially initiate negotiations toward establishing a Preferential Trade Agreement (PTA), aimed at facilitating seamless cross-border trade and unlocking new market opportunities for businesses across both nations.
Highlighting the investment potential in the country, President Muizzu affirmed that the Maldivian Government stands ready to welcome Malaysian investors across key strategic sectors vital to the nation's sustainable development:
In addition, noting that tourism remains a vital bridge connecting the people of both countries, President Muizzu stated that the two nations have agreed to work collaboratively to expand two-way tourist arrivals and promote sustainable ecotourism. Both governments also resolved to foster joint collaboration in cultural exchanges, the halal industry, and Muslim-friendly travel initiatives.
President Muizzu emphasized that these shared initiatives and emerging opportunities will deliver substantial economic benefits to the businesses and economies of both nations, while reinforcing the enduring friendship between their people through robust economic partnerships.
