MALÉ, Maldives — Bank Negara Malaysia, the central bank of Malaysia, has agreed in principle to provide a USD 100 million financing facility requested by the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA), Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim officially announced today.
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim made the announcement during a joint press statement delivered alongside President Dr Mohamed Muizzu at the President's Office, following extensive official talks held as part of his state visit to the Maldives.
Prime Minister Anwar revealed that President Dr Muizzu had formally written to him requesting the Malaysian central bank's assistance in securing the USD 100 million facility for the MMA. In response to the Maldives' request, Bank Negara Malaysia has formally agreed in principle to support the arrangement.
Detailing the execution of the deal, Prime Minister Anwar stated that both central banks are working swiftly to establish the necessary mechanisms and complete the administrative procedures required to conclude and sign the final agreement at the earliest possible time.
He underscored that this substantial financial assistance was made possible due to the profound mutual trust and enduring friendship between the two brotherly nations.
With the Maldives and Malaysia marking 58 years of formal diplomatic and political relations, the USD 100 million facility is set to provide critical backing to the Maldives' macroeconomic stability and significantly reinforce its national foreign exchange reserves.
