President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has assured the public that the government's measures to address the ongoing US dollar shortage are grounded in extensive research and consultation, expressing confidence that these steps will deliver strong economic outcomes.
Speaking on Public Service Media’s (PSM) "Nation Chat" program, the President addressed recent scrutiny regarding the administration's foreign exchange policies.
President Muizzu emphasized that the ongoing policy shifts, which include restructuring dollar regulations and strictly enforcing previously dormant financial laws, are essential components of the government's broader economic recovery strategy. While acknowledging that political figures may attempt to criticize the decisions for political gain, he stated that the general public understands and supports the necessity of these interventions to stabilize the economy. He reiterated that the administration is solely focused on economic advancement and would never implement measures that could intentionally hinder national progress.
Defending the administration's policy change, the President highlighted that every regulatory change and legal amendment is strictly "fact-based." He detailed that policy decisions are not made on a whim; rather, they are the result of months of rigorous technical evaluations, comprehensive research, and comparative studies of international best practices by teams of highly educated professionals and technical experts.
Additionally, the President noted that the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) is actively rolling out complementary reforms to strengthen the local banking sector, with several key operational decisions already finalized and in effect.
