Four suspects arrested in connection with a motorcycle collision that seriously injured a police officer at a checkpoint on the Sinamalé Bridge have all tested positive for drugs, according to orders issued by the Criminal Court on Saturday.
The incident took place at around 4:29 a.m. on Saturday during a special police operation targeting reckless and dangerous driving. Police believe the motorcycle was deliberately driven into a checkpoint, leaving an officer with serious injuries.
Following their arrests, the four suspects were brought before the Criminal Court, which ordered them to remain in custody for five days while the investigation continues.
According to information presented in connection with the case, the motorcycle was driven directly towards a police checkpoint set up as part of the operation against dangerous driving.
The impact left the officer with injuries to his mouth, broken teeth and other serious injuries. The person riding the motorcycle, meanwhile, was not reported to have suffered serious injuries.
Officers at the scene stopped the motorcycle and took its occupants into custody.
Police subsequently continued their investigation, leading to the identification and arrest of additional suspects believed to be connected to the incident.
Police Commissioner Ahmed Mohamed later confirmed that two additional suspects had been arrested and another motorcycle connected to the incident had been recovered.
The arrests brought the total number of suspects in the case to four. All four subsequently tested positive for drugs, according to the information cited in the Criminal Court's remand orders.
The court ordered the suspects to remain in custody for five days. During the hearing, the suspects requested access to legal counsel.
Investigators are continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident and the alleged involvement of each suspect.
Homeland Security Minister Ali Ihusaan visited the injured police officer at ADK Hospital following the incident. Deputy Commissioner Farhad Fikry accompanied the minister during the visit.
Police believe the officer may have been deliberately struck in an attempt to disrupt the ongoing crackdown on reckless driving.
The incident has raised serious concerns about the risks faced by police officers carrying out traffic enforcement duties, particularly during operations targeting dangerous behaviour on the roads.
The Sinamalé Bridge is a key route connecting Malé with Hulhumalé and Velana International Airport, making traffic safety and enforcement along the route particularly important.
The case remains under investigation, and the allegations against the four suspects have yet to be established in court.
