The Maldives has called for stronger unity among Islamic nations and closer cooperation between member states as the country marks 50 years since joining the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).
Foreign Minister Iruthisham Adam made the call while addressing the 52nd Session of the OIC Council of Foreign Ministers in Baghdad, Iraq, on Saturday.
Speaking at the meeting, Minister Iruthisham highlighted the Maldives’ contributions to the organisation over the past five decades and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to working with other member states to protect the common interests of the Islamic Ummah.
She stressed that dialogue, solidarity and inclusive participation are essential to building peaceful and resilient societies, particularly at a time of growing global uncertainty.
The minister also outlined the Maldives’ efforts to create more opportunities for persons with disabilities and strengthen the participation of women and young people in public life.
Addressing the Palestinian issue, Iruthisham reiterated the Maldives’ support for an independent and sovereign Palestinian state based on the pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
She called on OIC member states to strengthen their collective efforts to advance the Palestinian cause.
On the sidelines of the meeting, the foreign minister held discussions with several OIC counterparts on ways to strengthen bilateral relations and expand cooperation between their countries.
Minister Iruthisham was accompanied by Additional Secretary Shiruzimath Sameer and Assistant Director Mohamed Shujau during the visit.
