MTCC has received its first bulk shipment of boulders, marking a major step toward fulfilling the government’s pledge to accelerate stalled infrastructure development projects across the atolls.
The shipment, weighing 56,450 tonnes, forms part of the government’s initiative to import 2.5 million tonnes of boulders by the end of the year to support Public Sector Investment Programme (PSIP) projects nationwide.
This effort follows a directive from President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, who instructed relevant agencies to prioritise the import of boulders after identifying material shortages as a key cause of delays in harbour construction and coastal protection works during his island visits. The President emphasised that the shortage had hindered progress on critical projects, directly impacting communities awaiting essential infrastructure.
The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), which oversees several PSIP initiatives, confirmed that the newly arrived shipment will first be allocated to harbour development projects in Baa Maalhos, with Baa, Raa, and Lhaviyani atolls also set to receive material allocations.
Established in 1980, MTCC has played a pivotal role in the Maldives’ infrastructure development for over four decades. Company officials stated that once all shipments are received, ongoing projects will proceed without further disruptions, bringing long-awaited progress and relief to island communities across the nation.
