The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has officially commenced the long-awaited harbour development project in Noonu Foddhoo, a move set to transform the island’s connectivity and support its growing tourism sector.

Foddhoo, with a population of 504 residents, has seen steady growth in its guesthouse industry, currently hosting five operational guesthouses. However, the absence of proper harbour infrastructure has long impeded transportation and logistics, with residents and tourists relying on a seasonal jetty usable only during the western monsoon.

To address these challenges, the Government awarded the project to MTCC, with a contract value of MVR 49.77 million. The development scope includes:

• Excavation of a 30,648-cubic-metre harbour basin
• Backfilling of 3,990 cubic metres
• Construction of a 145-metre outer breakwater
• A 165-metre revetment
• A 130-metre quay wall
• A 125-metre-long, 6-metre-wide jetty
• A 600-square-metre paved area
• Installation of navigation and harbour lighting

MTCC stated that the new harbour will be spacious, modern, and specifically designed to accommodate the increasing demands of Foddhoo’s economy, particularly tourism and maritime transport.

Established in 1980, MTCC has remained a cornerstone of infrastructure development across the Maldives. With a portfolio of critical national projects, the company continues to contribute to sustainable economic growth and island resilience.

The Foddhoo harbour development is expected to strengthen local trade, promote investment in guesthouse tourism, and enhance everyday life for the island’s residents.
