Microsoft announces the layoff of 1,900 employees

Microsoft has recently announced plans to lay off, around 1,900 employees, which accounts for 9% of its gaming unit workforce. This decision is part of a strategy aimed at streamlining operations and reducing areas of overlap within the company. The layoffs come shortly after Microsofts acquisition of Activision Blizzard.

On social media platform X ( Twitter) Mike Ybarra, the President of Blizzard shared that he is departing from Microsoft and Blizzard. Additionally Allen Adham, co founder of Blizzard and the design chief for the unit will also be leaving. In a memo by Matt Booty, head of Microsofts gaming studios it was revealed that development on a survival game by Blizzard will be discontinued. The Verge has published Bootys memo. It has been confirmed as authentic by a Microsoft spokesperson.

Phil Spencer, CEO of Microsoft Gaming assured that the affected employees would receive support including location severance packages.

It is worth noting that Activision Blizzard owns gaming franchises such as Call of Duty and Diablo while also being the parent company to mobile gaming subsidiary King. The creators behind Candy Crush Saga.

Despite these changes and anticipated layoffs following mergers, in general Microsofts stock remained relatively stable after this announcement.

Microsofts acquisition of Activision Blizzard, for a $69 billion surpasses its record from 2016 when it acquired LinkedIn more than doubling the value. As economic pressures continue to rise investors in the tech industry are optimistic about increased efficiency and a clearer trajectory, towards growth and profitability.
