Making aviation history, the national airline, Maldivian, has officially commenced its first-ever direct flight operations between Australia and the Maldives. The historic inaugural flight from Melbourne touched down at Velana International Airport (VIA) today, bringing 240 passengers straight to the archipelago.

Culture and Convenience

The landmark arrival eliminates the need for lengthy transfers, cutting the long-haul journey down to a direct 11-hour flight using Maldivian's wide-body aircraft. Passengers stepping off the maiden voyage were welcomed with traditional island hospitality and a vibrant Boduberu drumming performance.

The new non-stop service will operate on a weekly rotation, with flights departing from the Maldives every Sunday and returning from Melbourne on Tuesdays.

Soaring Demand

The route was launched following thorough market research highlighting Australia's growing influence on local tourism. Tourism Ministry statistics rank Australia as the 10th top source market for the Maldives this year, accounting for 18,066 arrivals as of May 16.

The airline anticipates the direct connection will draw an additional 11,000 Australian visitors annually. Early demand is exceptionally high; Maldivian confirmed that the first three flights are completely full, while bookings for subsequent weeks have already crossed the 50% capacity mark.
