The Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) has announced a significant financial turnaround during its Annual General Meeting (AGM) held today, marking 2024 as the first profitable year in four years for the country’s official tourism promotion agency.
According to the corporation, net profits for 2024 stood at MVR 27,490,370, a notable reversal from the MVR 17,997,662 loss in 2023. This return to profitability is attributed to strong fiscal discipline, strategic reforms, and closer alignment with government and industry directives.
MMPRC reported a 10% reduction in recurrent operational expenses and implemented a performance-based audit of its global public relations partnerships. As a result, the number of international PR agencies was reduced from 21 to just 6, saving over MVR 4 million.
The corporation also overhauled its approach to international trade shows and exhibitions, previously consuming nearly 80% of its marketing budget. That figure now stands at 34%, with average savings of MVR 2 million per major event — all while maintaining strong industry engagement and visibility.
MMPRC is currently running over 21 active global campaigns. It has also launched co-investment marketing partnerships with international tour operators and airlines, valued at more than MVR 10 million. These dollar-to-dollar matching campaigns have helped the Maldives remain competitive in an evolving global travel landscape.
Tourism indicators remain strong. All of the Maldives’ top ten source markets posted positive year-on-year growth. In particular, India recovered from a 39% drop in 2023 to a 4% increase in 2024. Other key markets including Russia, the UK, and China also showed record performance. Google Trends data reflected a 1000% surge in Maldives-related searches from both Europe and Asia, underscoring the impact of MMPRC’s digital outreach.
The AGM reflected MMPRC’s transformation into a results-oriented and data-driven marketing organisation. With an emphasis on transparency, efficiency, and partnership, the corporation reaffirmed its mission to deliver lasting value to the tourism industry and the broader Maldivian economy.
“This turnaround year is not just a financial milestone,” stated the MMPRC board. “It is a signal of our strengthened role in supporting one of the Maldives’ most vital sectors.”
The AGM concluded with renewed commitments to innovation, accountability, and collaborative progress in positioning the Maldives as a leading global travel destination.
