President Dr Mohamed Muizzu officiated the groundbreaking ceremony for Masjid Unmul’mu’minin Aisha R.A. on Wednesday afternoon in Hulhumalé Phase One. The mosque will be built on the same site as the existing temporary mosque.
The project is an initiative of Medina Investment Management and is funded by Sheikh Ismail Mohamed’s generous contribution. The two-storey mosque, named in honour of Unmul’mu’minin Aisha R.A., the wife of Prophet Mohamed (PBUH), will accommodate around 2,000 worshippers. It features a research library, a dedicated women’s prayer wing, and female-only bathrooms. In alignment with sustainability efforts, the entire mosque will be powered by renewable energy.
President Muizzu was accompanied at the ceremony by First Lady Madam Sajidha Mohamed, Sheikh Ismail Mohamed and his family, Cabinet Ministers, and senior Government officials.
This initiative marks a significant step in enhancing religious facilities in Hulhumalé, while incorporating modern amenities and sustainability-focused infrastructure to serve the growing community.
