State Trading Organization (STO) has released onions, potatoes, and eggs imported specifically for the upcoming Ramadan month, aiming to stabilize prices and ensure affordability during the fasting period.
In a press release issued today, STO emphasized that the main objective of importing these essential items is to keep market prices reasonable, ensuring that consumers have access to staple goods at fair rates.
As part of this initiative, STO has set wholesale prices at:
- A case of eggs: MVR 320
- A sack of potatoes: MVR 310
- A sack of onions: MVR 310
In comparison, current market prices for the same items range higher, with a case of eggs selling between MVR 360-400, and sacks of onions and potatoes priced between MVR 360-380.
Wholesale buyers can purchase these items from the STO Wholesale Center and STO Warehouse located in the Industrial Village Zone, while retail sales will be available through STO People's Choice outlets. Retail prices have been set as follows:
- Eggs – MVR 2 per egg
- Onions – MVR 14 per kilo
- Potatoes – MVR 18 per kilo
STO noted that these prices are set in alignment with current market rates, and adjustments may be made depending on market fluctuations. While prices will generally remain the same across all STO regional outlets, localized changes may occur in exceptional cases due to regional market conditions.
This initiative reflects STO’s commitment to ensuring price stability and food security during Ramadan, a time when demand for essential commodities typically surges.
