The State Trading Organisation (STO) has officially begun selling 23 newly designated essential food items, fulfilling a major government pledge to ensure affordable, sustainable, and stable food availability across the Maldives.

The items are currently available for purchase at the STO People’s Choice Supermarket in Malé.

The strategic decision to classify these products as essential was announced on 14 September, with the government delivering on its commitment to make them available within a month. The selection focused on highly imported and widely consumed household items, prioritising those with significant nutritional and health value.

The initiative aims to tackle price volatility, which has long caused fluctuations in the cost of everyday goods. STO has assured that the prices of these essential items will remain fixed based on current market rates, safeguarding consumers from future increases.

The newly regulated list includes a wide range of fruits, vegetables, and staple goods.

While these products are currently sold on a retail basis in Malé, STO confirmed that plans are underway to expand to wholesale distribution, ensuring island-wide access across all atolls.

STO also reaffirmed its support for local producers, expressing readiness to purchase essential items directly from Maldivian farmers and traders. The organisation already sources passion fruit and dragon fruit from a farming island in Haa Dhaalu Atoll, signalling a growing effort to integrate domestic agriculture into the national supply chain.

STO concluded by guaranteeing a consistent and sustainable supply of these items, assuring consumers that the products will remain readily available and that shortages will be prevented through careful market management.
