President Muizzu Ratifies Second Amendment to the Elections Commission Act
Ahmed Shurau
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has ratified the Second Amendment to the Elections Commission Act (Act No. 8/2008), introducing significant changes to the structure and procedures of the Elections Commission. The amendment, passed by Parliament during its 53rd sitting on Wednesday, November 25, 2024, aims to streamline the appointment and resignation processes for key leadership positions within the Commission.
Under the newly ratified amendment, the President of the Maldives is now required to appoint the President and Vice President of the Elections Commission from among its existing members. These appointments are subject to approval by a majority vote in Parliament, reinforcing a system of checks and balances.
The amendment also revises the resignation procedure for the Commission’s leadership. The President or Vice President of the Elections Commission must now submit their resignation in writing directly to the President of the Maldives.
Additionally, the amendment ensures continuity of leadership by stipulating that the current President and Vice President of the Commission will remain in their positions unless removed through legal procedures.
Following ratification, the Second Amendment to the Elections Commission Act has officially come into effect upon its publication in the Government Gazette.
This amendment underscores the government’s commitment to strengthening democratic processes and enhancing the operational framework of key institutions in the Maldives.
