The Maldives has officially launched a high-level training program titled “Building the Capacity of Imams and Preachers,” aimed at strengthening the role of religious leaders in the fight against terrorism and extremism. The program, organized by the Islamic Military Counter Terrorism Coalition (IMCTC) under its strategic initiative Wasata, commenced today in the capital city of Malé.

The launch ceremony took place in the presence of prominent dignitaries including Minister of Islamic Affairs Dr. Mohammed Shaheem Ali Saeed, Minister of Sports Abdulla Rafiu, and IMCTC Secretary-General Maj. Gen. Mohammed bin Saeed Al-Moghedi.

Speaking at the event, Dr. Shaheem highlighted the importance of equipping imams and preachers with the right tools and knowledge to counter extremist ideologies. He stressed that terrorism is an ideological illness with no religious foundation, and that the antidote lies in spreading accurate and balanced Islamic teachings. He expressed his deep appreciation to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for its leadership in counterterrorism efforts and ongoing support through initiatives like IMCTC.

“Saudi Arabia’s extensive experience in countering extremism is a valuable resource for countries like the Maldives,” said Dr. Shaheem. “Under the guidance of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, the Maldives continues to pursue effective strategies to confront terrorism, in partnership with nations who share the same vision for peace and security.”

IMCTC Secretary-General Maj. Gen. Al-Moghedi underscored that the Coalition was created to unify and strengthen the global response to terrorism across four core domains: ideological, media, counter terrorism financing, and military. He noted that the training program aligns with IMCTC’s commitment to supporting member states with more than 90 training sessions and 20 knowledge-sharing initiatives planned under its strategic framework.

“This initiative is a testament to our belief that counterterrorism extends beyond the battlefield,” said Maj. Gen. Al-Moghedi. “Combating radical ideologies with knowledge, dialogue, and credible religious scholarship is vital to creating long-term resilience against extremist narratives.”

The five-day program includes a series of interactive workshops and lectures covering the methods used by extremist groups for recruitment, effective communication and public speaking skills for religious leaders, and the promotion of moderation in Islamic discourse. Participants will also exchange best practices and successful preaching experiences to further enrich their outreach efforts.

Organized in collaboration with the National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC) of the Maldives, the program represents a holistic approach to combating extremism through education, engagement, and international cooperation. It reinforces the shared commitment of IMCTC member nations to foster safer, more inclusive communities through the power of faith and informed leadership.
