In a surprising twist for Indian youth football, Ranjit Bajaj has reportedly decided not to take up the Team Manager role with India’s U-15 setup, despite a strong public campaign calling for his involvement.

Bajaj, the founder of Minerva Academy Football Club, had spent months pushing for a greater role in India’s youth national-team programme. His decision to step away now has raised questions, particularly because it comes after Minerva’s recent run of impressive results on the international youth circuit.

A Philosophy Clash With Bibiano Fernandes

The main reason cited for Bajaj’s decision is a reported difference in footballing philosophy with newly appointed head coach Bibiano Fernandes.

Fernandes has built a strong reputation in Indian youth football, with his teams consistently qualifying for major Asian competitions. His approach places heavy emphasis on realistic, match-specific training, decision-making and giving young players the freedom to make mistakes while understanding the team’s tactical intentions.

Bajaj, meanwhile, has long promoted a philosophy centred on winning, discipline, character development and giving young Indian players exposure to demanding international environments. Minerva describes its approach as combining football development with discipline, resilience and leadership.

The clash between two different approaches appears to have become the key issue behind Bajaj's decision to decline the position.

Minerva's Recent Success

The timing is particularly notable because Minerva Academy has been enjoying significant attention for its youth teams.

Minerva’s U-15 side recently produced a major result at the Mediterranean International Cup in Spain, defeating Liverpool’s U-15 team 6-0 in the round of 16.

The academy has also highlighted its success in European youth tournaments. Its U-15 programme was sent on an ambitious international tour in 2025, including competitions such as the Gothia Cup and Helsinki Cup.

More recently, Minerva’s youth teams continued to make headlines, including a Gothia Cup 2026 triumph that followed success at the Helsinki Cup.

Why Bajaj's Decision Is Surprising

Bajaj's decision is generating discussion because he had publicly campaigned for an opportunity to contribute to India's youth national-team programme. With the U-15 generation being viewed as an important part of India's long-term football development, many expected his experience in grassroots football and youth development to be utilised.

However, Bajaj appears unwilling to accept a role if he believes the overall footballing direction does not match his own vision.

For Indian football, the episode highlights a wider question: should youth development prioritise results and competitive exposure, or focus more heavily on a clearly defined technical and tactical development process?
