Two Bangladeshi nationals have been arrested following a targeted raid on a safari vessel after being accused of running an illegal alcohol trade, drug possession, and narcotics trafficking.
The suspects have been identified as MD Fazli Rabbi, 25, and MD Shahajan Sawal, 36. They were apprehended during a joint intelligence-led operation executed by the Drug Enforcement Department and the Counter-Narcotics Intelligence unit on May 24, 2026.
A thorough search of the vessel led to the discovery and confiscation of 207 bottles of alcohol alongside suspected narcotics with a preliminary weight of 4.43 grams. In addition to the contraband, officers seized a substantial amount of cash in both local currency and US dollars, suspected to be illicit proceeds from the trade.
Following their arrest, both men were brought before the criminal court for their remand hearings, where the presiding judge ordered them to be held in custody for 15 days. The Maldives Police Service is actively investigating the case.
