MALE, April 30 – Bank of Maldives (BML) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Singapore Management University (SMU) to formalise and expand their strategic partnership in leadership development, professional education, and capacity building, the bank announced Thursday.

The agreement strengthens collaboration between BML Academy, the bank's dedicated institute for academic and professional growth, and SMU Academy, the professional training arm of the Singaporean university.

Under the terms of the MOU, SMU will support the design and delivery of tailored learning programmes for BML employees while building internal expertise through structured knowledge transfer. Officials said the initiative would enhance BML Academy's ability to scale high-quality development opportunities and establish clear pathways for continuous professional advancement.

Leadership Commitment

Mr Mohamed Shareef, CEO and Managing Director of Bank of Maldives, described the partnership as a reflection of the bank's ongoing commitment to developing a leadership pipeline and raising professional capabilities.

"As the Maldives' largest financial institution, we play an important role in shaping the economy. Through BML Academy, we are building structured, internationally aligned learning pathways that empower the future leaders of our economy," Shareef said.

Existing Collaboration Yields Results

According to bank officials, key initiatives delivered with SMU last year included leadership programmes successfully completed by 40 BML employees.

Twenty senior staff earned the Executive Certificate in Leadership and People Management directly from SMU, while another 20 received the Certificate in Leadership and People Management via BML Academy after finishing an SMU-led certificate programme.

Similar cohorts are currently ongoing as the partnership continues to develop, officials added.

Ongoing Investment

Bank of Maldives remains committed to investing in people development and strengthening capabilities across the organisation, supporting its ongoing transformation and focus on delivering enhanced banking services. Through BML Academy, the bank continues to deliver structured professional development programmes for its employees, according to the statement.
