President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has formally informed the Prime Minister of Mauritius of the Maldives’ decision to withdraw the letter dated 22 August 2022, issued by former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, concerning the Maldives’ position on the United Nations General Assembly Resolution on the Chagos Archipelago.
The decision, announced during the Presidential Address at the first sitting of the first session of the 20th People’s Majlis, follows a comprehensive review of the previous administration’s actions in the ITLOS case on maritime boundary delimitation between Maldives and Mauritius. The current Government noted that the previous administration’s sudden change in position during the proceedings was unreasonable, unjustified, and detrimental to Maldives’ interests.
Citing historical evidence, including a 16th-century Maldivian royal decree asserting sovereignty over Foalhavahi, the President emphasized the Maldives’ legitimate interest in the future status and governance of the Chagos Archipelago.
The President further stated that a national enquiry will be established to investigate the case and reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to constructive engagement with Mauritius and international stakeholders to achieve a fair, balanced, and regionally stable solution under international law, while safeguarding the Maldives’ long-term interests in the Indian Ocean.
