Kimi Antonelli delivered another sensational performance to secure pole position for the Japanese Grand Prix, leading a dominant Mercedes one two ahead of teammate George Russell, while Oscar Piastri claimed third for McLaren.
The young Italian continued his incredible rise in Formula 1 by setting the benchmark lap in qualifying at Suzuka, marking back to back poles and further cementing his status as one of the standout stars of the 2026 season. Mercedes once again showed their superiority over a single lap, locking out the front row for the third consecutive race.
Antonelli had already laid down the fastest times earlier in the session and held his advantage despite changing track conditions in the final runs. His composure under pressure proved crucial, as rivals struggled to match the pace of the Silver Arrows.
George Russell, the current championship leader, settled for second after facing minor setup and tyre issues that prevented him from improving on his final attempt. Despite missing out on pole, the result still underlined Mercedes’ strong grip on the season so far.
Oscar Piastri emerged as best of the rest in third for McLaren, continuing the team’s consistent form and positioning himself as a key challenger heading into race day. Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc followed in fourth, while Lando Norris completed the top five as the battle behind Mercedes remained tightly contested.
One of the biggest shocks of the session came from Max Verstappen, who endured a difficult qualifying and failed to reach the final shootout, leaving Red Bull with significant ground to recover in the race. The Dutch driver struggled with balance and pace, highlighting the team’s ongoing challenges under the new regulations.
The result means Antonelli will start from pole for the third round of the season at Suzuka, a circuit where track position is often crucial, with a large percentage of races historically won from the front row.
With Mercedes in complete control over one lap and rivals searching for answers, all eyes now turn to race day to see whether Antonelli can convert pole into victory or if Russell and the chasing pack can challenge him when it matters most.
