Kimi Antonelli claimed a commanding victory at the Japanese Grand Prix, taking control of the 2026 Formula 1 Drivers’ Championship after a dramatic race at Suzuka shaped by a major crash and a pivotal Safety Car.

The Mercedes driver secured his second consecutive win and, in doing so, became the youngest championship leader in Formula 1 history, underlining his remarkable start to life in the sport.

Antonelli’s race was not straightforward. Despite starting from pole, he lost positions early on, but everything changed mid race when Oliver Bearman crashed heavily at the high speed Spoon Curve.

The Haas driver’s accident brought out the Safety Car and reshuffled the race order, creating a crucial opportunity for those yet to pit.

Antonelli capitalized perfectly on the timing, making a decisive stop under the Safety Car that effectively handed him track position. From there, he controlled the race and managed the restart flawlessly to pull clear of the chasing pack.

Behind him, Oscar Piastri delivered a strong drive to finish second for McLaren, while Charles Leclerc completed the podium for Ferrari after holding off a late challenge from George Russell.

The result further highlights Mercedes’ early season dominance, with the team continuing to lead the way under the new 2026 regulations.

For Antonelli, this victory marks another milestone in a rapidly rising career. Becoming the youngest ever championship leader adds yet another record to his name and confirms his status as one of the sport’s brightest stars.

With momentum firmly on his side, Antonelli now heads into the next round as the driver to beat, as the battle for the 2026 title begins to take shape.
