Maldives Airports Company Limited has announced that efforts are underway to complete the land reclamation works for Hulhumalé Phase III within the next one and a half months, as the Government accelerates initiatives to address housing needs in the Greater Malé Region.
Land reclamation for the third phase of Hulhumalé began in October 2023, though progress was affected by several temporary interruptions. Work resumed on 10 November 2025, gaining renewed momentum following the deployment of additional heavy machinery.
To speed up the project, the Government has deployed two large dredgers, each capable of handling up to 22,000 cubic metres of sand at a time. One of these is a trailing suction hopper dredger operated by Boskalis, which began reclamation operations on 28 November.
According to MACL, a total of 31 hectares of land had been reclaimed by Saturday, accounting for approximately 49.2 percent of the planned 63 hectares for Hulhumalé Phase III. The company stated that the remaining work is expected to be completed within the next six weeks.
Once reclamation of Hulhumalé Phase III is completed, the Government plans to commence the allocation of land plots in the newly reclaimed area.
Following the completion of Phase III, the large dredgers currently in operation will be redeployed for land reclamation works in Gulhifalhu. The Government continues to carry out multiple reclamation projects across the Malé region as part of broader efforts to address long standing housing challenges.
At present, reclamation works are ongoing in Rasmalé and Hulhumalé Phase III, with additional projects planned for Giraavaru Falhu, Uthuru Thila Falhu and Gulhifalhu in the near future.
