The Housing Development Corporation (HDC), in collaboration with the Environment Protection Agency (EPA) and the Maldives Marine Research Institute (MMRI), has launched the Coral Garden Project, an initiative aimed at restoring coral ecosystems in Hulhumalé Channel Park.
The project was inaugurated with a coral collection programme on the eastern reef of Hulhumalé. HDC announced that the project will be carried out in phases, with further coral planting scheduled throughout the coming year. The initiative seeks to regenerate marine biodiversity and forms part of HDC’s wider commitment to community engagement and environmental stewardship.
As part of the project, Modular Artificial Reef Structure (MARRS) frames have been deployed to monitor coral health, growth, and survival rates. HDC Managing Director Mohamed Mauroof Jameel stated that the effort aims to reintroduce marine species to the area and create a thriving underwater garden.
Officials from HDC, EPA, and MMRI attended the launch event, marking the beginning of what is expected to become a flagship marine conservation initiative in Hulhumalé.
