In a ceremony rich with cultural tradition and diplomatic significance, Mr Hao Zhang, the newly appointed United Nations Resident Coordinator for the Maldives, formally presented his credentials to President Dr Mohamed Muizzu at the President’s Office earlier today.
Mr Zhang was escorted from Republic Square to the President’s Office in a traditional Haiykolhu procession, accompanied by the Drum and Trumpet Band of the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF)—a vibrant showcase of Maldivian heritage and respect for diplomatic ties.
During the formal meeting following the presentation, President Muizzu warmly welcomed Mr Zhang to the Maldives and acknowledged the United Nations’ vital role in advancing national priorities, particularly in health, education, and human development.
The President emphasised the importance of continued UN engagement in the Maldives' pursuit of becoming a fully developed nation by 2040, outlining key areas for partnership. He specifically highlighted opportunities for collaboration in enforcing the newly ratified generational ban on tobacco, and in expanding mental health and wellbeing initiatives across the country.
The ceremony comes during a landmark year for Maldives-UN relations, as 2025 marks the 60th anniversary of the Maldives’ membership in the United Nations—a milestone in the country’s ongoing journey of peace, development, and international cooperation.
President Muizzu concluded by expressing confidence in Mr Zhang’s leadership and reaffirmed the Maldives' commitment to strengthening ties with the UN system, as the nation moves toward a more resilient, inclusive, and sustainable future.
