The search is underway for a 25-year-old man who went missing after the "Holhudhoo Boat" caught fire and sank early this morning while transporting goods to the Thaa and Laamu atolls.
According to the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF), the vessel sank at 2:07 am after catching fire near Kandoodhoo, en route to Malé. The man, identified as Ali Mushfiq from Laamu atoll Maavah, was among the 18 individuals on board the ill-fated boat. Authorities confirmed that he is still missing, and his whereabouts remain unknown despite ongoing search operations.
MNDF officials have deployed a comprehensive search effort, including Coast Guard Ship Ghaazee, FIC Maafaiy, HP 114, divers, and specialized troops from the MNDF Central Area Command. Additionally, Airco drones are being utilized to assist with the search, covering both aerial and underwater regions in an effort to locate Mushfiq.
"Every available resource has been mobilized to find Ali Mushfiq. Our teams are working tirelessly to ensure a thorough search in the area," an MNDF spokesperson said.
The boat, which was operating on a lease basis, caught fire while traveling near Kandoodhoo. While reports indicate that the fire caused significant damage to the vessel, floating debris from the sunken boat remains a hazard to vessels traveling in the area. Authorities have issued a warning for vessels to exercise caution in the vicinity.
Two individuals—one Maldivian and one expatriate—sustained injuries in the fire and were treated at the Kandoodhoo Health Centre before being transferred to the Kudahuvadhoo Health Centre for further medical attention. While their injuries were not life-threatening, both individuals were reported to be in shock following the traumatic incident.
As the search for Ali Mushfiq continues, authorities are urging anyone with information about the incident to come forward, as the investigation into the fire and its causes remains ongoing. The MNDF has also reassured the public that all possible measures are being taken to locate the missing person and ensure the safety of the surrounding area.
