President Launches Public Poll on Generation Ban for Tobacco Use

Ahmed Shurau
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has launched a special poll to gather public opinion on the age at which the Generation Ban on tobacco use should be enforced. This initiative marks a historic first in Maldivian politics, as it is the first time a sitting President has used a social media platform to directly seek public input on a major policy decision.
The poll, opened on the President’s official X account, presents three options for public consideration:
- Prohibiting smoking for all individuals born on or after January 1, 2007
- Prohibiting smoking for all individuals born on or after January 1, 2004
- Prohibiting smoking for all individuals born on or after January 1, 2000
This initiative follows President Muizzu’s commitment to engaging the public in policymaking. During the second episode of "Rayyithunnaa Eku" on April 2, 2025, a podcast series designed to address public concerns and provide direct responses, the President announced that a Cabinet paper on the Generation Ban is being drafted. The policy is being developed in consultation with medical professionals and other stakeholders to ensure a well-informed approach.
President Muizzu previously explained that the proposed age brackets focus on individuals between 18 and 25, as this age group is considered the most critical period for preventing addiction before it becomes entrenched. By seeking direct public input, the Administration aims to shape a policy that reflects the will of the people while promoting public health.
