The Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA), the nation's central bank, has officially issued a commercial banking license and operational approval to Maldives Premier Bank Private Limited.
According to an official statement released by the MMA, the licensing follows a preliminary approval granted on May 16, 2025, to establish a "Tier 1" bank. The applicant successfully fulfilled all conditions set by the central bank, which included approved changes to the bank’s name and ownership structure before the official license and operational green light were finalized on May 18, 2026.
The MMA highlighted that introducing Maldives Premier Bank is a significant step forward in its ongoing strategy to strengthen the Maldivian financial sector. By fostering healthier competition within the banking industry, the regulatory body aims to expand accessibility and make diverse financial services more readily available to the public.
The central bank reiterated its long-term objective: maintaining a robust, well-regulated, and competitive financial ecosystem under stringent supervisory guidelines to ensure inclusivity for all stakeholders.
Maldives Premier Bank enters the market with substantial local backing. The newly licensed institution counts Mohamed Ali Janah, one of the most prominent and successful business leaders in the Maldives, as a key shareholder.
