Norris Beats Verstappen and Antonelli to Victory in Dramatic Hungarian GP

Lando Norris claimed his first victory of the 2026 Formula 1 season with a superb drive at the Hungarian Grand Prix, overcoming early setbacks and late race pressure to lead McLaren back to the top step of the podium.

Starting from pole position, Norris lost the lead on the opening lap but remained firmly in contention as the race unfolded. A well-timed strategy and flawless execution from McLaren allowed the Briton to regain control, and he managed the closing laps expertly to secure a long-awaited victory.

Max Verstappen produced one of Red Bull’s strongest performances of the season to finish second, while championship leader Kimi Antonelli completed the podium for Mercedes after another consistent drive that helped extend his advantage at the top of the Drivers’ Championship.

McLaren looked set to celebrate a dominant one two finish after Oscar Piastri led during the race, but the Australian’s hopes were cruelly ended when a mechanical failure forced him to retire with just 14 laps remaining. The retirement denied the team a perfect afternoon but could not take away Norris’ first win of the campaign.

Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc finished fourth after teammate Lewis Hamilton was handed a five second post race penalty for speeding in the pit lane. Hamilton crossed the line in fourth but was classified fifth following the time penalty, while George Russell recovered brilliantly from a disastrous opening lap that dropped him to 19th before fighting back to seventh.

Although Antonelli was unable to challenge Norris and Verstappen for victory, third place proved invaluable in the championship battle. The young Italian increased his lead in the standings to 50 points, strengthening his position as he continues his bid to become Formula 1’s youngest ever World Champion.

The result marks a significant breakthrough for McLaren, ending the team’s wait for a victory in 2026 and providing a timely boost before the championship heads into its next phase. For Norris, it was a composed and determined performance that demonstrated both speed and racecraft under pressure.
