Malaysia Set to Host Bahrain Grand Prix at Sepang in Unique 2026 Calendar Change

Formula 1 is set for a unique addition to its 2026 calendar, with Malaysia expected to host the Bahrain Grand Prix at the Sepang International Circuit from 2 to 4 October, following changes to the original schedule.

The event, which remains subject to final agreements and official FIA and Formula 1 approval, will be officially known as the Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia. Rather than returning as the Malaysian Grand Prix, the race will retain Bahrain’s title while being staged at the iconic Sepang circuit.

The revised event is expected to take place between the Azerbaijan and Singapore Grands Prix, filling the gap created after the Bahrain and Saudi Arabian Grands Prix were unable to be held in their traditional April dates due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

Sepang previously hosted Formula 1 from 1999 to 2017 and was widely regarded as one of the sport’s most challenging venues. Known for its long straights, sweeping corners and unpredictable tropical weather, the circuit produced many memorable races before being dropped from the calendar.

If the plans receive final approval, Formula 1 will make its long-awaited return to Malaysia for the first time in nearly a decade, while preserving Bahrain’s place on the 2026 World Championship calendar despite the change in venue.

The move demonstrates Formula 1’s determination to complete as much of the scheduled championship as possible while adapting to extraordinary circumstances. It also gives fans in Southeast Asia the opportunity to welcome Formula 1 back to one of the region’s most popular circuits.

An official confirmation from Formula 1, the FIA and local organisers is expected once the remaining contractual and logistical arrangements have been completed. If approved, the race at Sepang will become one of the most unusual and anticipated events of the 2026 Formula 1 season
