MG Football Team (MGFT) made a winning start to the Kaashidhoo Council Football Challenge 2026, defeating defending champions SP Sports Club (SPSC) 3-2 in a thrilling Group A opener at the Kaashidhoo Football Stadium.
The tournament's opening match lived up to expectations, producing five goals and end-to-end action as former champions MGFT overcame the reigning title holders to claim a valuable three points.
MGFT took control of the contest in the first half, racing into a 2-1 lead before the break. The momentum continued after halftime as both sides added another goal, with MGFT doing enough to secure a memorable 3-2 victory.
The star of the evening was Bakhodirov Boburnirzo, who scored twice to inspire MGFT to victory. The team's third goal was netted by Manual Kofi Brogyah, completing an impressive attacking display against the defending champions.
SPSC fought hard throughout the match but were unable to find a late equaliser, suffering an opening-day defeat in their title defence.
For his match-winning brace and outstanding all-round performance, Bakhodirov Boburnirzo was deservedly named Man of the Match.
The result gives MGFT a perfect start to their Group A campaign, while SPSC will now be looking to bounce back in their next fixture as the race for the semi-finals continues.
