The Maldives Under-18 Men's Handball Team made a flying start to their IHF Trophy Zone II Men's Junior Championship 2026 campaign with a commanding 38-21 victory over Afghanistan on Tuesday.

Playing their opening match of the tournament, the young Maldivian side displayed excellent teamwork and attacking quality to dominate proceedings from start to finish. The victory gives the Maldives an early boost as they aim to challenge for top honours in the regional competition.

Leading the charge was Mohamed Aflaah, who produced a standout performance and was deservedly named Player of the Match. Aflaah was instrumental in the Maldivian attack, contributing crucial goals and helping his team maintain control throughout the encounter.

The Maldives showed impressive defensive discipline while also capitalizing on scoring opportunities at the other end, gradually extending their lead as the match progressed. Afghanistan struggled to contain the fast-paced Maldivian offense, allowing the hosts to secure a comfortable 17-goal victory.

The win marks a positive start for the national junior team, who entered the competition determined to make their mark against some of the strongest emerging handball nations in the region.

According to the tournament schedule, the Maldives will next face Bangladesh on June 11 before taking on Nepal on June 12 and India on June 14 in the remaining group-stage matches.

With confidence high following their impressive opening performance, the Maldivian youngsters will be looking to carry their momentum into the upcoming fixtures as they continue their quest for success in the IHF Trophy Zone II Championship.
