For more than two decades, Hassan Shamoon has been one of the most dominant figures in Maldivian athletics. From a teenage sensation to a national champion and now an international masters medalist, his journey is a story of dedication, perseverance, and excellence.
Shamoon began his athletics career in 2002 at the age of just 16. His first major competition was the 15th National Athletics Championship, where he made an immediate impact by winning gold medals in both the shot put and discus throw events. To make his debut even more memorable, he broke a long-standing national record in the discus throw.
That remarkable start laid the foundation for a highly successful career.
Over the years, Shamoon established himself as the leading thrower in the country, earning more than 50 individual medals in national competitions while setting national records in both the shot put and discus throw.
Representing Dhivehi Sifainge Club (DSC), he became one of the most decorated athletes in Maldivian athletics history, winning the National Athletics Championship title 12 times and the Association Championship title on five occasions.
His consistent performances also earned individual recognition.
Shamoon was named Best Athlete at the National Athletics Championship in 2016 and 2025, while also claiming the Best Athlete Award at the Association Championship in 2025.
In 2025, Shamoon embarked on a new chapter by entering masters athletics competition. His first international masters event was the Sri Lankan National Masters Athletics Championship, where he finished fourth in the shot put and fifth in the discus throw.
Later that year, he represented the Maldives at the 23rd Asian Masters Athletics Championship in Chennai, India, gaining valuable international experience against some of Asia's top masters athletes.
The breakthrough finally arrived in 2026 at the 38th Malaysian International Masters Athletics Championship.
Competing against athletes from across the region, Shamoon produced the finest international performance of his career, winning a gold medal in the javelin throw, a silver medal in the shot put, and a bronze medal in the discus throw.
The achievement marked his first international masters athletics medals and added another milestone to an already distinguished career.
From breaking national records as a 16-year-old debutant to standing on the international podium more than two decades later, Hassan Shamoon has continued to prove why he is regarded as the "Throwing King" of Maldivian athletics.
His journey remains an inspiration for the next generation of athletes and a testament to the rewards of hard work, determination, and passion for sport.
