ADDU CITY – In a milestone for the Maldivian travel industry, The Traveller Umrah Group has officially inaugurated the "Addu-Makkah" route, marking the first time direct Umrah flights will operate from an airport other than Velana International Airport (VIA).
The service was officially launched by Addu City Mayor Ali Nizar during a special ceremony held in Addu City last night.
A First for Southern Maldives
The "Addu-Makkah" route provides a direct connection between Addu City Gan International Airport and King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. This initiative is expected to revolutionize travel for pilgrims residing in the southern atolls, who previously had to travel to the capital, Male', to catch international flights.
A media official from The Traveller Umrah Group highlighted that this service would significantly ease the logistical and financial burden on southern residents.
"This route will bring immense convenience. It eliminates the high costs of domestic airfare and the additional expenses of staying in Male' prior to departure. Furthermore, it allows pilgrims to spend those final moments before their spiritual journey with their families at home," the official stated.
Package Details and Pricing
The group has unveiled three primary packages for the new route:
*Includes the last 15 days of Ramadan and the first 6 days of Shawwal.
While the Addu-Makkah route is priced approximately MVR 1,600 higher than the group’s standard Male' departure (priced at MVR 28,400), the company noted that the savings on domestic transfers and accommodation in the capital make the Addu route a far more economical choice for southern travelers.
Flight Operations
The direct flights will utilize Maldivian’s Airbus A330 wide-body aircraft, which has a seating capacity of 264 passengers. This expansion is also seen as a solution to the seasonal shortage of domestic flight seats during the July and December holiday periods.
Bookings for the Addu-Mecca route are now officially open. Interested pilgrims can contact Dhaturuveriya Umrah Group at 9476612 for further information.
