George Russell launched his 2026 title campaign in perfect fashion by winning the season opening Australian Grand Prixat Albert Park Circuit, leading a commanding one-two finish for Mercedes ahead of teammate Kimi Antonelli.

The race began with immediate drama as Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc surged into the lead at Turn 1 after Russell’s launch from pole. The pair then produced one of the most exciting openings to a season in recent memory, exchanging the lead multiple times in the first nine laps as the new 2026 racing systems encouraged aggressive overtaking.

Mercedes ultimately gained the decisive advantage during an early virtual safety car period, executing a perfectly timed pit stop that allowed Russell to regain control of the race. From that moment onward, the British driver steadily pulled away, taking the chequered flag with a comfortable margin over Antonelli to secure his sixth career victory.

Antonelli’s second place completed a dominant Mercedes result, while Leclerc held on to finish third for Ferrari after a tense battle with teammate Lewis Hamilton, who crossed the line just behind in fourth.

Further down the order, reigning champion Lando Norris finished fifth for McLaren, while Max Verstappen produced an impressive recovery drive to sixth after starting from the back of the grid following his qualifying crash.

The race also featured several dramatic moments, including retirements and incidents across the field, while rookie Arvid Lindblad impressed by finishing inside the points on his Formula 1 debut.

Russell’s victory marks the first win of the new Formula 1 era under the 2026 regulations and immediately places Mercedes at the top of both championships. After a strong pre-season and a front-row lockout in qualifying, the Silver Arrows converted their pace into a statement result in Melbourne, sending a clear message to their rivals that they will be serious contenders throughout the season. 🏁
