Russell Storms to Pole in Melbourne as Mercedes Lock Out Front Row

George Russell delivered a commanding performance to secure pole position for the season opening Australian Grand Prix, leading a dominant Mercedes one two ahead of teammate Kimi Antonelli at the Albert Park Circuit.
Russell set a stunning lap of 1:18.518 during Q3, finishing nearly three tenths of a second faster than Antonelli. The result marks the Briton’s first pole position in Australia and the eighth of his Formula 1 career, while also giving Mercedes a strong statement at the start of the new technical era.
Antonelli’s front row start was particularly remarkable after the Italian rookie suffered a heavy crash in final practice earlier in the day. Mercedes mechanics worked quickly to repair the damaged car, allowing him to participate in qualifying and ultimately secure second place.
Third place went to Isack Hadjar on his Red Bull debut, though he was nearly eight tenths slower than Russell’s benchmark. Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc qualified fourth, followed by McLaren’s Oscar Piastri, who delighted the Melbourne crowd with a strong top five result at his home race.
One of the biggest moments of the session came early in Q1 when reigning champion Max Verstappen crashed into the barriers before setting a representative lap time. The incident brought out a red flag and left the Red Bull driver facing a difficult race from the back of the grid.
There was further drama during the later stages of qualifying when Antonelli’s car was released with cooling devices still attached, which fell onto the track and triggered another red flag after debris was struck by another car. The incident is under investigation by the stewards following the session.
With Mercedes locking out the front row and several frontrunners facing challenges behind them, the stage is set for an unpredictable opening race of the 2026 season. Russell will start from pole with momentum on his side, while Antonelli, Hadjar and the chasing pack prepare to battle for victory when the lights go out in Melbourne.
