Max Verstappen has confirmed he is unharmed following a heavy crash during qualifying for the 2026 Australian Grand Prix at the Albert Park Circuit.
The Red Bull Racing driver lost control on his first flying lap in Q1. As he braked into Turn 1, the rear wheels of the car suddenly locked, sending the car spinning across the gravel before slamming into the barriers and bringing out an immediate red flag.
Despite the severity of the impact, Verstappen climbed out of the car on his own and later reassured fans that he was feeling fine. As a precaution, he underwent medical checks after the session and had X-rays taken on his hands, which confirmed that there were no fractures.
Speaking after qualifying, the four-time world champion explained that the crash appeared to be triggered by an unexpected issue under braking. He said the rear axle locked suddenly when he applied the brakes, something he described as unusual and not something he had experienced before in Formula 1.
The crash meant Verstappen was eliminated in Q1 and will start the race from the back of the grid, creating a major challenge for the defending champion in the opening round of the season.
Red Bull mechanics now face an overnight rebuild of the damaged car ahead of race day, while Verstappen will focus on preparing for what could become a recovery drive through the field when the lights go out in Melbourne.
