Vice President Uz Hussain Mohamed Latheef has praised the longstanding partnership between the Maldives and the United Kingdom, describing it as one built on mutual trust, enduring friendship, and a shared commitment to global peace and stability.

He made the remarks at an official reception hosted by the British High Commission in Malé to celebrate the birthday of His Majesty King Charles III.

In his address, the Vice President conveyed warm greetings and best wishes to His Majesty on behalf of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu. He also highlighted King Charles III’s longstanding commitment to environmental protection, sustainable development, and the preservation of cultural heritage, noting that these values closely align with the Maldives’ national priorities. He added that His Majesty’s leadership has promoted collective responsibility and encouraged international cooperation to address environmental challenges.

The Vice President noted that this year marks the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the Maldives and the United Kingdom. He said the relationship, rooted in sustainable development and cultural preservation, has been further strengthened through recent high level engagements. These include President Dr Muizzu’s visit to the United Kingdom, the President’s private audience with His Majesty the King, and the Vice President’s meeting with His Majesty at the 27th Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting last year.

He also expressed appreciation to the UK Government for handing over the original chairs used during the signing of the Maldives’ Independence Agreement in 1965, describing the gesture as meaningful and deeply symbolic.

Concluding his remarks, Vice President Latheef reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to further strengthening cooperation with the United Kingdom in pursuit of shared prosperity, security, and sustainable development.
