Maldives Customs Service has intercepted a package of cannabis worth approximately MVR 2.4 million at Velana International Airport.
Customs said three kilograms of cannabis leaves were seized at the airport on Saturday. The agency estimated the street value of the drugs at around MVR 2.4 million.
The seizure follows an earlier interception by Customs earlier this month, in which 1.2 kilograms of cannabis were seized.
The latest case comes ahead of amendments to the Drug Act set to take effect next year, which introduce the death penalty for drug trafficking. Under the amendments, the death penalty will be imposed for trafficking more than 350 grams of cannabis, more than 250 grams of diamorphine (heroin), and more than 100 grams of other Schedule 1 drugs.
