Norris Takes São Paulo Pole as Verstappen Disqualified in Q1 Shock

Lando Norris delivered a sensational performance to claim pole position for the 2025 São Paulo Grand Prix, as reigning world champion Max Verstappen was dramatically disqualified in Q1 after a technical infringement left Red Bull reeling.

Norris set a blistering pace under the lights at Interlagos, his McLaren showing supreme balance through the Senna S and dominant traction out of the final corner. Mercedes rookie Kimi Antonelli continued his strong weekend form by securing second, just two-tenths behind Norris, while Oscar Piastri completed the top three for McLaren after an intense qualifying session that saw constant position changes in the dying moments.

The major story, however, was Verstappen’s sudden exit. The Dutchman initially posted a competitive lap but was later disqualified when post session scrutineering found his car in breach of the FIA’s floor deflection regulations. The decision sent shockwaves through the paddock, leaving Verstappen to start from the back of the grid and handing a massive opportunity to his championship rivals.

George Russell took fourth for Mercedes, ahead of Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso. Both Ferraris showed flashes of pace but struggled to match McLaren’s consistency in the middle sector, where Norris gained the most time.

With Verstappen out of the picture, Norris now finds himself in the perfect position to extend his lead in the championship. “That felt incredible,” Norris said after qualifying. “The car was hooked up from the first run, and we nailed every lap when it mattered. It’s great to be starting at the front again.”

The grid is now set for what promises to be a thrilling São Paulo Grand Prix on Sunday, with the race beginning at 1 AM Maldives time. After a dramatic qualifying session marked by controversy and precision, all eyes are on Norris and McLaren as they chase another crucial victory in the 2025 title fight.
