Stelco’s State Utility Skills Academy in Thulusdhoo Inaugurated

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has inaugurated the State Utility Skills Academy, a new training and development centre established by the State Electric Company Limited (Stelco) in K. Thulusdhoo.

The inauguration ceremony was held yesterday and attended by Stelco Managing Director Ahmed Shamah Rashid, senior company officials, and invited guests.

The academy was established to enhance the quality of engineering services in the Maldives by fostering greater interest in the field and developing skilled professionals. It aims to provide specialised training and certification opportunities to empower young Maldivians pursuing careers in the utility and engineering sectors.

The State Utility Skills Academy will host training programs conducted by Stelco experts and academic partners, including the Maldives National University (MNU). A Memorandum of Understanding between Stelco and MNU was signed on 26 October 2025 to formalise cooperation on courses and joint training initiatives.

State Utility Skills Academy – At a Glance

1. Includes classrooms, a workshop, a laboratory, and on-site accommodation.
2. Total project cost: MVR 5 million.
3. Construction was completed entirely by Stelco employees.
4. Equipped to train 50 students at a time.
5. Features a renewable energy laboratory established in collaboration with Yant and Dongfang Wisdom Electric Co. Ltd of China, with equipment valued at USD 200,000.

The centre represents Stelco’s growing commitment to strengthening local expertise in engineering, renewable energy, and utility management, contributing to national development goals and workforce self-sufficiency.
