STELCO Inaugurates New Power Plant in Dhiffushi, Tripling Island’s Power Capacity

The State Electric Company (STELCO) has officially inaugurated its new Water plant in K. Dhiffushi, marking a major step in strengthening the island’s energy infrastructure.

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu inaugurated the facility during his ongoing tour of Kaafu Atoll, accompanied by STELCO Managing Director Ahmed Shamah and senior officials from the company.

Construction of the new power plant began on 26 June 2024 and was completed on 30 April 2025 — a timeline STELCO described as a record achievement. The project is notable for being the first infrastructure initiative to be both launched and completed under the current administration.

According to Dhiffushi station manager Hussain Shafiu, the island’s previous power plant had a generation capacity of 2,200 kW. The new facility now provides three times that capacity, significantly improving power reliability and ensuring the island can meet future demand.

Built on a 30,000-square-foot plot, the new plant houses modern facilities including offices, a kitchen, a coffee corner, and a prayer room. STELCO also addressed long-standing staff accommodation challenges by constructing a two-bedroom residential block within the premises — a measure expected to reduce operational costs and improve employee welfare.

The new plant includes a state-of-the-art control room and two additional fuel tanks, enhancing fuel storage and supply efficiency. STELCO stated that the project aligns with its broader goal of modernising power infrastructure nationwide to ensure reliable, sustainable energy delivery across all inhabited islands.
