The Maldives has officially set a new Guinness World Record for the most people snorkeling simultaneously during the Baani Event, held on 18 October 2025 in Baa Atoll. A total of 623 snorkelers participated, marking a proud national achievement that highlights the country’s deep connection with the ocean and its leadership in sustainable marine tourism.

Organised by the Baa Atoll Council in collaboration with the Visit Maldives Corporation (VMC), the event brought together participants from 13 islands and 15 resorts, alongside international tourists and local communities from across the nation. The unity of resort staff, guests, and residents showcased the Maldives’ commitment to environmental stewardship and ocean conservation.

The record-breaking attempt took place at Villingilifaru Finolhu, located just 10 minutes from Eydhafushi. With its western lagoon and coral-rich outer reef teeming with marine life and hundreds of Black-naped Terns, the location provided a breathtaking setting for this historic moment.

The synchronized snorkeling session began at 16:30 hrs and lasted for an hour, with participants entering the clear blue waters at multiple designated points around the pristine sandbank. A Guinness World Records adjudicator officially confirmed the new record, presenting the plaque to the Baa Atoll Council during a lively ceremony featuring music, entertainment, and a fireworks display.

The achievement was also inducted into the Visit Maldives Book of Records, with a commemorative plaque and coin presented by Ibrahim Shiuree, CEO and Managing Director of Visit Maldives Corporation, to the Baa Atoll Council.

“This achievement is a proud moment for our nation. It reflects our people’s bond with the ocean and our collective commitment to preserving it for generations to come,” said Ibrahim Shiuree, CEO and MD of Visit Maldives Corporation.

The Baani Event serves as a shining example of how community participation, tourism, and conservation can work hand in hand. It perfectly aligns with Visit Maldives’ vision to position the country as a global leader in marine tourism and sustainability, celebrating the Maldives’ enduring relationship with the ocean while inspiring collective action to protect its fragile marine ecosystems.
