A 30-ton ice plant has been officially inaugurated in Sh. Funadhoo, marking a key milestone in the Government’s efforts to strengthen the Maldives’ fisheries sector.

The ice plant was inaugurated by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu during his ongoing visit to Funadhoo. The ceremony was attended by Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Resources Ahmed Shiyam, Funadhoo Constituency MP Mohamed Mamdhooh, and members of the Funadhoo Island Council.

Developed by the Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO), the new facility has a production capacity of 30 tonnes of ice per day, along with a 50-tonne storage capacity.

This is the first ice plant to be commissioned under President Dr Muizzu’s administration, following the government’s decision to award the project to MIFCO in September last year.

The establishment of new ice plants is a central component of the Government’s strategy to enhance fisheries infrastructure, improve post-harvest facilities, and support fishermen across the atolls.

Speaking at the event, officials noted that the new facility will help ensure consistent ice supply for fishing vessels, reducing spoilage and boosting productivity in one of the nation’s most vital economic sectors.
