Four Arrested Over Theft of Seized Cigarette Containers from Hulhumalé Terminal

Police have arrested four individuals, including two businessmen and a senior Customs official, in connection with the theft of two containers of cigarettes seized by the Maldives Customs Service at the Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) Hulhumalé International Terminal.

According to police, the incident occurred after two containers of cigarettes seized on April 26, 2025, were stolen from the terminal. The theft was reported to authorities on October 9.

As part of the investigation, twelve people have been banned from leaving the country, and search operations have been conducted at various locations, including vehicles and premises linked to the case.

Police confirmed that a major operation is currently underway, with further details to be disclosed as the investigation progresses.

The Maldives Customs Service has yet to issue a formal statement regarding the incident, which has raised serious concerns about security protocols and internal collusion in handling seized goods.
