The Maldives Police Service has issued a public safety alert urging residents and travellers to exercise caution, as the Maldives Meteorological Service (MET Office) forecasts strong winds, rough seas, and heavy rain across the country starting tonight.
According to the MET Office, rough sea conditions and possible swell waves are expected, particularly across the Central and Southern atolls, with adverse weather conditions likely to persist until next Friday.
The Police have appealed to the public to remain vigilant and take preventive measures, especially those involved in sea travel. They advised ferry operators, fishermen, and passengers to pay close attention to weather warnings and obtain the latest updates before travelling.
Safety Measures Highlighted by Police:
- Avoid non-essential sea travel during periods of strong winds and rough seas.
- Check the latest weather information and ensure safety gear is available before departure.
- Drivers should remain cautious on wet roads and in conditions of reduced visibility.
- Follow official weather alerts and comply with instructions from relevant authorities.
- Residents in coastal areas prone to swell waves should remain alert and take necessary precautions.
The Police also confirmed that they have coordinated with other relevant agencies to ensure a joint response to any incidents resulting from the adverse weather. The public is urged to contact 911 in case of emergencies or if assistance is needed.
According to the MET Office, winds tonight are expected to reach 10–20 miles per hour in the Northern atolls from the West and Northwest, and 12–23 miles per hour in the Southern and Central atolls, with gusts of up to 45 miles per hour possible during squalls. Seas across the Maldives are expected to be rough throughout the night.
